Life will certainly be easier if you can delete your old system partitions.

You won't actually have to delete it - if you boot from the SuSE CD, it'll
show you which partitions it detected as pre-existing Linux partitions and
ask your permission to overwrite them.  I think you'll find the installation
pretty painless done that way.

I'm running 6.4 on my machines right now - the only thing I've really needed
to upgrade was Xfree86 - which is still 3.3.6 under SuSE - 4.0.1 is the
latest.

Of course what you *should* do is load SuSE over the top of the Win98 partition!
