I do mine as:

/xl     (rw,no_root_squash)

I'm not sure what the "insecure" flag gets you; but I don't have any trouble.
:-)  I'll also note that I've done this since about SuSE 6.1; so it may also
be a "feature" in the older version of NFS.  Sorry, I'm not an NFS guru.

If you have a specific test you'd like me to try to help you debug it, to
compare systems/versions, I'll be happy to help.
