: The time has come for me to get my sound card working. It's an SBLive! card.
: Works beautifully under M$win98 (and NT when that was loaded). But I can't
: seem to make it work under Linux, even with the instructions & driver that
: Creative (and SuSE) provide. Has anyone else managed to make one of these
: work correctly? If yes, would you _please_ share how you did it.
:
: It's running a 2.2.14 kernel, SuSE 6.4 distro.

if you feel a little adventurous, you could check out the ALSA sound
system. it's available at http://www.alsa-project.org. i've been using
them since v0.5.4 (about 5 months), and i've been pretty pleased (all i
really do is play MP3s with XMMS and maybe play a little Q3A every once
in a while).

PROS:
ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) will eventually replace the
    current OSS sound architecture.
It's "bleeding edge" and fun. ;)
Has a lot of advanced features that I'll probably never use.

CONS:
OSS mixers don't work (like the volume control on XMMS). BTW, there
are a couple ALSA mixers in the alsa-utils distribution.

so, if you want to try something new (or you just can't get the OSS
drivers to work), check out the ALSA project.
