Greg --
I'm pretty fond of Mdk 7.0 and 7.1; latter is one I'm currently using --
typical GUI desktop/ office user, no networking/ server. I have been
ever since first installed 7.0, appx. 5 mos. ago. I won't go into
details here; check NTLUG Discuss archives, available through NTLUG
webpages. I wrote a couple of lengthy praises re Mdk., on Aug 4--5, and
on Feb. 29; others posted then, also. (If you are unable to get them
thru archives -- though you shouldn't have trouble -- but if you do,
write privately and will be glad to forward copies of my posts.)
Deluxe vs. server edition? -- Dunno; I suspect it's just more pkgs. on
CDs, with printed manuals or without, etc. My versions are all Linux
Central/ NTLUG inexpensive CDs. I'm not using server, so cannot comment
on [ don't know whether there are ] any server "optimizations", etc.
On my machine -- Diamond Stealth 3D3000 video card, 4 MB video RAM (3
year old card), with Sony 100sx monitor, Pent II 266 MHz, 160 MB RAM,
xfree 4 installed/ runs flawlessly; caution -- see my early Aug. post;
when installing, caution to punch the right buttons in install routine,
get all the way thru X install; else, may have to re-run entire
installation; X config. is right at end of install, and it's just a
little touchy, IMO. I use both Helix Gnome, and also KDE, but mainly
Gnome. Ice window mgr. also worked well w/ Gnome, but have been using
Helix gen'lly most of the time. Enlightenment seemed OK, too, but IMO
it's a real resource hog so I've not much liked E for quite awhile.
I have not been using my Linux side for faxing, so sorry, dunno about the
fax routine.
Your other Qs -- USB, CD R/W -- I haven't tried to use my Intel camera
which is USB, so dunno. Also, I don't have CD r/w, so again, dunno. HTH
