I think that's my problem.  I did this:

  ifconfig dummy0 down

...and now everything works (providing I broadcast to 192.168.0.255).

I guess SuSE installed that when I set up my modem - and then didn't
delete it when I added my home 10baseT networking.

What's amazing is that everything (apart from broadcast) works fine
with that in the system.

I **hate** working with networks...give me graphics any day!
