damn, dude, that's easy to fix. you're describing the default behavior which
most of us prefer. If you want windows behavior, set up the automounter and no
caching.

one tiny little linux thing really irritates me.

say you're using the gnome file manager (gmc) and you're browsing a
floppy's contents. ok, well you have to mount /dev/fd0 first. then you
pull out the floppy and put another one in the drive because you want to
browse *that* floppy's contents. you click the "rescan" button because
you want to refresh the window with the new floppy's contents. wrong!
no new file list. ok, so you then go to unmount the floppy. wrong!
you can't unmount the floppy as long as you're viewing the contents of
/mnt/floppy with gmc, because the floppy drive is "busy". ok....
randomly select another directory and then you can unmount/remount your
floppy drive and *then* view the contents of the other disk.

is there *any* other way around this tedious process to view floppy
disks?

(you know, i know of another OS where you can exchange a floppy disk and
view its contents without having to do all of this extra work ;)

...grumble,grumble...grumble.
