Long Shot: This may be something you've checked and find glaringly
obvious - but I have to ask:
Whatever cable used to link your computer to the modem should not have
been used to connect the hub to the modem - right?
I don't know which 'gender' your modem is - but if it needs a crossover
cable to connect straight into the back of the computer - then it WON'T
need one to connect into the hub. If it didn't need a crossover to connect
into the computer then it WILL need one in order to plug into the hub.
Computer to hub should be a non-crossed cable come-what-may.
Either way, if you didn't pay attention to the cable genders, this could
easily be your problem. I don't know how it would explain your particular
set of symptoms though.
