[NTLUG:Discuss] bell ring

How would I make my pc "beep"?  I've checked the bash man page and it
gives talk about 

echo -e \a

for the "alert (bell)" but I can't get it to work  <shrug>

I want to use this in conjunction with gkrellm, where I can specify a
command to execute when new mail arrives.  I don't want to cat a .au
file to /dev/dsp, I just want my pc to "beep" like it does in VC when I
gits mail.
