i wouldn't mix distributions -- you've already experienced why not to
got a fast internet connection? go get helix-gnome, it provides a great
utility for updating all kinds of software packages even if you don't
run gnome. (gimp, gnumeric, gnapster, gaim, etc) I don't run gnome
(usually) but i still get all my software updated from there...
get the details at http://helixcode.com and when you're ready to
install, click on any download button. or if you can't wait, you can go
straight to

follow the 'structions :)
