okay...be sure that you update your modules.dep in that dir and 
/etc/modules.conf(conf.modules for older RH systems) that should fix your 
modules problems...make sure that modules.conf points to the modules.dep in 
the 2.2.17 directory. I had similiar problems with 2.4.0 test series with 
modules because my depmod was old...might want to try upgrading that 
package(s)
