I'd run lpd in nodaemon mode and watch what it's trying to do. I sure don't
recognize /home/apprint... Did you install a different print server? Have you
changed ownership of lpd? Run it by a different user than root? Been
compromised? Is lpd listening on the same port and unblocked by a firewall? ...

Subject: [NTLUG:Discuss] Printing problems

I Have an Alpha server running RH6.2 and has been rock solid up to about a
week ago. This same runes our POS Software and we have about 65 remote
print queues and our local lp set up on the computer. About a week ago the
summery page telling us what has printed quit printing. We would receive a:
jobs queued, but no daemon present, on the screen, if you did a lpd stop,
and a start it will dump whatever was queued and then die again. The
reports at the bottom said : LP connect : connection refused.

We also noticed that the stores that don't print is diff. each time. And
today after stopping and starting lpd while the queue was dumping to the
printer the screen message of:bash: /home/apprint/.bashrc: Permission
Denied printed about 5 to 6 times across the screen.

Can anybody help with this one?
