I agree with Chris on these points. Now one can find cheap hardware -
I saw a whole stack of Compaq Deskpro Pentium machines the other day
at Half Price Computers in Richardson for $99 each, and you can get
3c509 NICs for $5 - $10 each if you scrounge, BUT this does take up
more space, power and adds noise and heat. Used laptops (even with
broken screens) are a bit better but they tend to be more expensive.

The LinkSys is a pretty cheap solution in a very small package.
It's hard to match the price for the functionality and small size.
With the new ZD Linuxdevices' PC-on-a-chip I predict rolling your own
Linux network appliance ( in a low power, compact design) will get
a whole lot cheaper this year. It needs to get down to under $300
for a x586-166 system with disk-on chip and/or 5Volt 2/12" HD.
Or if I could get a Rebel Netwinder for $500 ...
