Look in your /etc/inittab and there is a line intigates the mgetty. You can
either comment it out if it is using ttyS* (serial).
I am not sure if mgetty can be used as a console, but if it using tty1 - tty5,
then you do not want to comment it out.
Just pulling your modem would not have fixed this because inittab tells it to
"respawn" (a.k.a infinite loop if something is broke).
