There are a lot of UNIX clones that used the 'ix' suffix to indicate that they
were 'a kind of UNIX'.  So, you see 'IRIX', 'Posix', 'Ultrix', 'Venix' ...and
since '*' indicates a wild-card in many UNIX applications, we talk about '*ix'
to mean "any kind of UNIX clone" - which has been extended to include Linux,
Solaris and others whose names don't *actually* end in 'ix'  :-)
