[NTLUG:Discuss] DSL in The Colony, and Southwestern Bell

Are you using PPPoE?

NO. I have an external DSL modem talking to my ethernet card.

Do you have to authenticate to the SWB network?

    Only for newsgroups.

If so, how did you configure the Linux box?

The normal Mandrake install recognizes my ethernet card. DHCP is
enabled
and handles all the configuration that is needed when I boot.

For newsgroups, I am prompted for a password.

My only problem is that periodically (it seems after every
thunderstorm) my
DSL dies. The local router is glitched. The only way to get it back
is to
call the support lines and waste 45 minutes letting them talk me
through
checking the windows settings. Only after they have convinced
themselves
that it isn't my Windows settings will they refer the problem to the
next
level (where they send a reset to the routers and fix the problem). I
don't know what they would do if I didn't have a Windows partition.

Can you suggest some docs?

     NO.

Regards,
Steven Gorwood

Quoting Gorwood, Steve <sgorwood at ti.com>:
When SW Bell installed on my computer, they insisted on a Windows
   installation and
wanted to see an original Windows install CD. I let them install on my
   Windows
partition and worked my Linux issues myself.

Does anyone have experience with Southwestern
Bell's DSL service in The Colony, TX?

I was told by Southwestern Bell that they require
authentication software on the computer. And that
I MUST use an MS Windows OS in order to take
advantage of the free 'self install' option.

If I choose to use Linux ... there will be a
$200.00 charge for a technician to come to my
house and install ... whatever it is they require.

Is there a way around this?

Does anyone know of an alternative DSL provider
   for The Colony Texas?

I searched for providers on the Internet but only
found one or two other providers. One of these
only provided ADSL (voice + Internet). The fees
are very high for the alternate providers I found.

   Covade : 89$ (IDSL, yuk) + equip/install charges = >$500.00

   InterConnect	: $109 to $279 equip/install = ? (Why even look?)

   IDT : $115 to $199 equip/install = ?

   SWB : ~$50.00 + $99.00 equip.

Verizon is priced very competitively, but they cannot
   service The Colony.

It looks like SWB owns me!!!

   F$@!%*&ers!
