Howdy - does anyone have any recommendations for SNMP? I want to monitor
Cisco and other Linux systems from my Linux box.
With regard to the discussion of numerics in Linux, I once took
Introduction to Electrical Engineering from a Professor Arwin Dugal at UT
Austin. He did not present an imposing figure at the lectern, and caught
incredible grief from of my snottier classmates. One CS major, in
particular, couldn't see the reason for some of our projects, such as a
complete cost and materials accounting to maintain a paper towel dispenser
versus an electric hand dryer in a corporate bathroom.
This CS major, whose name I don't recall, once addressed Dougal in front
of his class and told him his homework assignments were pointless, and
that her chosen field had already liberated engineers from the need to
think in any real depth. He let her rant, in his typical fashion, never
really meeting her insulting gaze, until she had her say. His answer I'll
always remember - "Never forget, young lady, we put people on the moon and
returned them safely with slide rules and three digits of precision."
Yes - practicality rules once you leave the domain of discrete values, and
you need to be comfortable with an overly large 9 evaluating as plausibly
equal to an extraordinarily small 10! :-)
