[NTLUG:Discuss] kernel updates...

I am trying desperately to upgrade the 2.2.16 kernel that comes with Slackware 7.1.  I've downloaded the current glib, modules, include files, and kernel sources. I've done make menuconfig; make dep, make bzImage; make modules; make modules_install (edited lilo.conf to add the new kernel) and booted up successfully with the new kernel.  The only problem is..(and it's a big one)  I can't load the stinking network card drivers.   It doesn't find the 3c509 module during boot and of course when I try to insmod the 3c509.o from the 2.2.16 modules directory it fails.

What steps am I missing?
