I am doing well on a laptop (actually 2) with RH 6.2 (Compaq Prosigna
160 and 165).
First get out on the WEB and ascertain that your hardware (every piece
of it) is supported (for RH for example, go to
http://hardware.redhat.com/redhatready/cgi-bin/us/db-hcl.cgi) - then go
for it!
One note on laptops - from my limited experience - these devices seem to
have a small partition on the disk that contains internal
diagnosic/setup stuff that is specific to the laptop in questions - do
not delete that partition.  It may not be essential for the running of
Linux on the machine (my 160 works without it), but it is your only door
to the BIOS that I know of.
