Yes, with no problem. I do nothing special to launch ppp:
/usr/sbin/pppd connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v -t 30 -e "" ATDT8177281000 CONNECT "" ogin:-BREAK-ogin:
minicom shown the modem init string to be:
~^M~AT S7=45 S0=0 L1 V1 X4 &c1 E1 Q0^H
