It reverts to software acceleration and... is... very... choppy... making... 
gameplay... impossible

I have tried removing the packages and installing from source.  When that
didn't work, i uninstalled ("make uninstall") and put back the RPMs.  It
still doesn't work.

Yes, the DRI section in XF86Config says "Mode 0666".
Yes, /dev/3dfx permissions are 666.
Yes, MESA_GLX_FX="fullscreen" is set.

The same thing happens as root or as a regular user.
