That's not the attitude to have. I can't give you specific numbers (except
that my Win2K file/iis server has been up without a problem for 83 days,
which is 54 days longer than our linux email/ftp server (probably not the
stat you were looking for)), but you have to keep in mind that Windows is
good for some things and Linux is good for some things. Having a happy
balance is a key (IMHO) to IS success. Some anti-MS people are so anti-MS
that they squeeze complicated Linux solutions into situations where a simple
Windows solution is already available (of course the flip side is a pro-MS
user who uses Windows where a Linux solution would be more appropriate).
Don't get sucked into the anti-MS/anti-Linux (or pro-MS/pro-Linux) frame of
mind. Think, "how can I achieve the best solution for my situation."
When the consultant says, "You've got to use Exchange 2000," say "We should
use Exchange 2000 if we want a comprehensive (expensive) collaboration
solution, but we should use Sendmail on Linux if we only want to serve email
and save the money for other projects."
When the consultant says, "All the users should be on Win98/Win2K Pro," say
"yeah, that's probably right (end users need the easiest solution
possible)."
If the consultant insists that a Win2K server is the only answer for network
file storage, inform him about how great Samba is for allowing Win users
access to Linux machine files/printers.
Please don't flame me. I'm for finding the best solution for the problem at
hand, whether it's Linux, Windows, Tru64, Etcha-Sketch or pen and paper.
Seek the balance.
Jackson

Take some K-Y jelly with you to the meeting, because you are
screwed. It matters not what kind of information you provide.
It will be ignored or downplayed. Enjoy the ride. Good luck.
