I have lost only 3 machines due to filesystem errors... they were
all running NTFS. The drives appear to be fine.... but the point
is that there was no reason in my mind for these failures
to just randomly target machines running NT.... there's something
 amiss in Redmond.

Now, now... That is hardly scientific, I can say the following:
I have 12 hardrives at home on 3 machines, the only ones I have
ever had a problem with were running ext2 (2 of them). I have never
had the slightest hiccup from the ntfs partitions/drives (6 of them).

unless I tell you that I passed 'bad' parameters to hdparm, you
might conclude (erroneously) that ext2 was BAD and ntfs was GOOD even
though what I said was 'true'.

I would hesitate to do such a thing without a valid source however,
and would urge you to do the same. Remember this thread is a result
of a cry for help from someone looking for sanity.

I don't pretend to understand the internals of any filesystem,
however, I have certainly had my share of filesystem issues in linux
from unexpected power loss.

btw, what kind of filesystem errors are you talking about anyway?
