[NTLUG:Discuss] 2 monitors, 1 cpu - different story

Most people who want to use 2 monitors on a linux box want to run X in a 
multi-headed mode.  I have a different request.

2 monitors
1 computer (w/1 keyboard & 1 mouse, 2 video cards)
simultaneous use of a console and an X session
(left monitor has a console up running vi while the right monitor has
an X session up)

I've searched the web for such a beast, but haven't found anything.  I can
see this requiring a kernel patch, but then maybe not.  In any case, has 
anyone done or heard of anyone doing this?
