Hello,
If anyone reads the Wall Street Journal check out page B5. It talks about
how Hollywood is going Linux. Industrial Light and Magic was switching
their systems from SGI to NT but switched it in midstream to Linux. The
movie 'Shrek' was created completely on Linux based Systems. The article
goes on to quote programmers from George Lucas's ILM on how they are a
company of 1300 employees but when they have a problem with the OS because
they are so small Microsoft wouldn't listen to them. Now they can optimize
the OS to increase the Frames Per Second processing, something they weren't
able to do with NT or their SGI systems. Titanic's water scenes where the
doomed boat was going through the water was done on Linux systems.
It says that several other film production companies in Hollywood is
switching to Linux as well, not just ILM.
The CGI market obviously isn't a huge biz, it has more bragging rights than
anything else. But it's a start!
My only problem with the article, like many articles dealing with Linux. It
credits the whole of the Free Software/Open Source movement upon Linus
Torvalds. Which is far from the truth, he played a key part, but not the
only part. Kinda like Bill Gates taking credit for the dropping costs of
computers, which is ludicrous.
