---could you have a problem with /etc/ipchains.conf ??? I had the same
-sounding- problem and found that i had missing information in that
file...the file may be in a different place in SuSE 7.1.

There IS no /etc/ipchains.conf

Also, the machine was running as a gateway.  I rebooted the machine, and
retyped the line that Chris gave me to make it run as the gateway (since I
haven't saved the ipchains.conf yet), and it doesn't work anymore.  I can't
even telnet into the box anymore.
