Red Hat 7.1 is still using gcc 2.96. I don't know if they did something to 
the kernel make process to force it to pick the 2.95.x gcc for kernel 
compiles.

I would expect this to still be a problem in Red Hat 7.1. Not only that, the 
"evil" has overflowed into Mandrake 8.0.
