The stories are interesting - let me add some personal experience:
(1) I have been playing with Linux since Red Hat 4.2, and using it as my
desktop (laptop) since Red Hat 6.2 (now using Red Hat 7.1), playing with
Caldera eDesktop 2.4, and SuSE 7.2 - I like it, I am especially excited
at the moment by SUSE.
(2) Linux gets a bad rap at "my place of employment" because our self
proclaimed Unix experts don't seem to be able to figure out how to use
directories, owners and groups, and permissions, to make a secure
environment - that's not surprising since they don't seem to be able do
that in NT or MAC OS either, but there they get to blame it on Microsoft
or Apple.
One more thought: As the economy tightens, anything that is cheap, or
free, will get some serious consideration.
