Like the one I had last week.  We had a *bunch* of PC's set up in a
conference room which had only one 10baseT outlet - so we used a cheap
8 port hub - 7 PC's plugged into it - and one wire going off to the
outlet on the wall which disappears into our corporate LAN.

Someone brought in an eighth PC - and seeing that there was a spare hole
on the back of the hub, went and plugged it in - and walked away. Next time
someone tried to fire up the system, nobody could access anything.

Of course the 8 port hub has nine sockets in the back because one of them
has the transmit/receive lines crossed for use with an uplink - but is
wired in parallel with one of the regular ports...so it's STILL only an
8 port hub!

Doh!

What made this worse was that someone called in our IS department who
went off checking this and that, changing port connections, IP addresses
and everything else they could think of to try to narrow down the problem.
When I walked in and found/fixed the original problem, it still didn't work
because of the total upheaval caused in effort to diagnose it.
