This is interesting reading about how M$ has approached Java.

Subject: [NTLUG:Discuss] Java Support?
I know that there are quite a few web site creators and maintainers on
this list and I was just curious what your reactions were to Microsoft's
announcement that they won't be supporting Java on WinXP? (Not even in
their browser)
* Will you immediately rewrite all that stuff in C# or whatever
weirdness M$ are going to stick everyone with.
* Will you assume that the uptake of XP will be slow - and that
3rd party Java plugins will take up the slack - and just stick
with Java?
This seems an amazingly arrogant thing of M$ to do so soon before
the impending next-round of anti-trust litigation.
The effect on Linux users is potentially rather serious. Making
a freeware C# clone won't be easy because (if I understand things
correctly), a bunch of Windoze OS calls are exposed directly through
the language.
