Greetings.

Might want to make sure that the JVM is running 1.3 or 1.4.

JDK 1.2, and especially 1.1, were extremely slow at this kind of stuff.

1.4 (currently only in Beta, but you should check it out), has had some
heavy speed optimizations added, especially to graphics and IO.
