[NTLUG:Discuss] Is Linux Ready for the desktop now?

First I'd like to say that I've been a GNOME fan since day-1 and immediately
prejudiced against KDE because of the non-GPL Qt thingy...
That said, I have recently started to evaluate RedHat 7.2, a strong
proponent of the GNOME desktop as the standard interface...so much so that
KDE has historically appeared in RedHat distros as what seems like an
"after-thought." On a lark, I decided to use KDE as my desktop over GNOME
this time... after all, it's a beta release that I don't have any intention
of using as a live machine anyway.
KDE 2.2 beta comes on the RedHat 7.2 image and let me tell you that it
converted me in a manner of seconds. Everything about the KDE just turned
me on. There are some GNOME things I'd like to see blended into KDE and
also I wish they would stop putting annoying Ks where they don't
belong...but as far as KDE itself is concerned, I'm running out of things to
complain about!! And I LOVE the MacOS X-like button-bar at the bottom!
Very nice indeed! Very attractive.
Is Linux ready for the desktop? NOT YET! But I can almost taste it. I
believe when RedHat can taste it too, they will dump their resources into
developing a desktop distribution to end all others. Right now, they just
aren't interested in it.
