Here's a plug for the Ion window manager.
In the words of its homepage, Ion "brings a text-editorish, keyboard friendly
user interface to window management". Ion rejects the desktop metaphor,
instead giving you screens divided into frames which never overlap. Because
of this, you can't lose an open window (which has always been one of by big
complaints about window managers). You never have to use the mouse if you
don't want to (unless the program you're using requires it). I found it easy
to set up and use. So far it's the best minimalist window manager I've used
(next to uwm, now my second favorite window manager). If you use the command
line a lot, it's worth a look.
