Could be a bad cable. The length should be ok as long as their is a
switch involved (see the following):

>From              To                     Maximum Distance
Switch            Switch or Hub          100 meters (328 feet)
Hub               Hub                    5 Meters   (16.4 feet)
Switch or Hub     Workstation            100 meters (328 feet)

Another thing to look at is the connectors on the cable. Make sure they
are all the way into the connector and crimped well.
If it was a store bought cable, I would definately check that out. Also
look at the cable for any kinks, these are not good for CAT 5 .
