[NTLUG:Discuss] TVTuner card running under Linux..

I've been using a TV tuner card with Linux for a couple of years. I
have a BT848 based board (made by STB), and most current TV tuner cards
are based on the same family of chips.

The drivers for the BT84X chips are part of the 2.2 kernel source tree,
and are probably already available as modules on your system if your
distribution included them (look for videodev in /lib/modules/[kernel
version]/misc.

There are two TV applications that I am aware of, one is xawtv, and the
other is kwintv (new release out today). You can find them on
freshmeat.net.

A Pentium-133 is more than enough to handle a BT48X based TV tuner card,
since most of the work is handled by the tuner card and your video
card. Very little CPU intervention is necessary.

One thing to watch out for though, TV tuner boards usually require a
strong signal to work properly, I haven't been able to use mine for much
since I can only get broadcast right now.

Getting video to work across networks is a bit tricky right now, but I
know of at least one project trying to do something like that, I just
don't remember what the name of it was.

Happy viewing,
Stephen
