long time listener, first time caller....

so when you install new kernel sources from redhat produced rpms, there's a
/usr/src/linux*/configs directory that has some predifined template-type
deals that can be used as your starting /usr/src/linux*/.config file that
i've found helpful, but i recently downloaded a tar.gz from kernel.org as i
need to go to a later version than is distributed via rpm and found no such
directory in the tarball, therefore i have no such starting templates,
making the 'make menuconfig' step require a little more attention. is this
a non-standard type thing that redhat includes in the packages that i should
just consider a crutch and get over, or should i get my tarball from
somewhere else (thought kernel.org was the definitive place).
