Go with SSH.  They use TCP wrappers.  If you are connecting from a host 
outside the firewall, it is not wise to use any plain text protocols 
(telnet, FTP, POP) since it can be sniffed.  If you have to use plain text 
protocols, like POP3, use a different account that doesn't have any other 
access.  I would never recommend using a plain text protocol for a shell 
account.
