[NTLUG:Discuss] Laptop Redhat 7.1

I am running 7.1 on a Sony Vaio PCG-F560. I had the same problem you are
having when I upgraded to 7.1. I had to set my color to 16 million
colors in order to be able to boot to a gui. When I did the test for X
it passed every time at any screen size, or colors. But when I booted, I
got a blank screen everytime. One other thing to think about is if your
laptop has the function of working with a monitor. I can hit fn
(function) and F7 on mine and it will switch between monitor, and laptop
screen. If you are running windows on the monitor, and reboot without
changing the F7 and unplug the monitor you will get a blank screen. I
know that is probably not what is happening, but thought I would throw
it here.

I had a similar experience with Red Hat 7.1 on a laptop (Dell Latitude
C850), except is was a fresh install and not an upgrade.

What I found was that no matter what graphical configuration I selected,
when I pushed the test button it seemed to ignore all my selections in
favor of settings it preferred. Then I found that if my selections did
not match those that it preferred I would experience trouble with X -
such as the black screen you describe.

The solution seems to be to make your selections match those shown in
    the "test" screen image.
