RH6.0 is a fairly old distro, so your video may not be supported by 
the version of X that was shipped with it.  I'd suggest that you
go to http://xfree86.org and download the latest version.

You might also want to try to capture stderr when you run startx
and post that so we can see what is actually happening:

startx 2>somefilename.txt
