If DHCP is not a good solution for you, like it was not for me at one point.
I got bored enough to write a script that you could configure several networks
in the configuration, and the script would go through each of the networks,
bringing each up.  It would then ping the gateway of the network to decide
which network you are on.  I had plans to amke it even do ppp and dhcp, but my
need for it went away.  I cannot find the script, but I am still looking for
it.  I told all of this so you could get a feel for how you might roll your
own.  I will for you my script if I come across it.
