sorry this is so old - I've been out of town..
I've been lucky with my cable modem, which I installed Apr 1998. I3S (now
BroadBandNow) has had only a few outages and nameserver problems in the
last 3 years. I have always had the full 1 Mbps to fast servers. However,
I've also noticed the web overall has "slowed down" in that time. I can
rarely achieve a full connection to any of the numerous broadband video
servers, for instance. This I believe is a major reason why broadband
hasn't caught on.
I don't intend to be mean or prejudicial, but I have seen enough evidence
to lead me to wonder how much this slow down is caused by the spread of
windows machines. It's obvious when you hit a slow server running windows
bloatware, but how much unnecessary extra traffic is caused by windows
clients? Windows 9x for instance is constantly broadcasting browse
queries.
Has anyone seen any study done on this?
