Aren't you supposed to use 'vipw' to 'vi' the password files?

I confess I don't use it either - but I recollect that under IRIX, vipw
won't write out the password file unless it's still syntactically correct
and passes some unspecified set of tests.

vipw exists for Linux - but to what degree it's similar to the IRIX version,
I don't know.
