The "make menuconfig" or "make xconfig" has a usb section, and a
keyboard and mouse section seperated from each other.
basically, I've had problems too, and I've gotten it right through
experimentation. I think you have to allow it to prompt you for
experimental code. once you do that, some of the usb options become
available. try enabling both usb modules.
Also, after doing a "make menuconfig", you have to do a "make dep". Then
you have to do a "make modules", and a "make modules_install", to get your
modules to be built, and installed in /lib/modules/2.4..
