That, of course, is precisely one of the questions I was trying to
ask, but you stated it much more succinctly. Thanks.

I finally gave up and rebooted.  Everything worked fine then.  (I hate
it when I refuse to spend enough time to learn how to solve a problem
_without_ rebooting.  That is such a Microsoft thing. Oh well, at
least I have the option!)
