[NTLUG:Discuss] Off topic... Souping up a UPS.

Once, about 6 years ago, I was trying to get a modem to work through a
cell phone. After many misleading claims by counter sales people, I found
I could get 2400 bps to work, but only during the week. On Sundays, when
the air time in those early days was free, it wouldn't connect.
Suspicious.

Anyway, I rigged a couple of 10 gauge wires with battery clamps to the DC
in on my APC unit, and used it to power my PC, parked on the side of the
road near a cell tower.

Naturally, the APC unit wouldn't power up without first being plugged into
a wall, so I had to 'prime' it, without a load on it, by plugging it into
a 100 watt Radio Shack inverter. After the APC unit 'saw' 110 VAC, it
would continue to run in backup mode, and I could power up my PC.

Yes, I know, I'm off topic too...
