One nice feature of GRUB is that it lets you look for and choose from
any kernel on any of your filesystems. I've had the problem sometimes
with lilo that neither /vmlinuz nor /vmlinuz.old was working, and the
older kernel that I had specified in my lilo.conf lacked some feature I
needed (such as support for a certain filesystem); when that happens
with lilo, it's a real hassle. With GRUB, when things go bad you can
always look for a recent kernel that has what you need and boot into it.
Still, you're safe so long as you keep updating lilo.conf every time you
build a new kernel, and always remember to re-run lilo.
