Hmm the multiple virtual interface option gives you all sorts of nifty benefits. Virtual web hosting with a dedicated ip address for each domain without the need for separate nics is possibly the most common use I've seen. Plus if you have a corporate network you can setup a single gateway/firewall machine that acts as if it was all the ips on your network then you can map them behind the scenes using iptables to thwart hacking. Or you could use such a setup for fail over in the event ip such n such is not responding and you want to takeover answering queries for it. Then all you need is a simple ifconfig ethx:x up and your new machine is now acting as if it were the one that is not responding. You fix the broken machine bring it back into the pool ifconfig x:x down and now your machine is backup and kicking and the amount of perceived downtime is very low if it was noticeable at all, seeing as how this should be automated in most setups.
