My boss does this with his laptop (running some variety of Windoze)
and what his can do is to display the output of one *window* onto
the video output whilst displaying the *whole* desktop on the other.
For slideshows, this means that he can see the controls *and* the
slides but the people watching the video output see only the
slides. However, if he overlaps the slide with another window, that
*DOES* show up on the video output so they aren't separate frame
buffers.
I don't think there is a way to display two completely different
images though (although some desktop video cards can do that - so
you might get lucky and find a laptop that can do it).
