[NTLUG:Discuss] duh, telnet server??

I'm trying to get a new install of redhat 7.2 to enable the telnet
server.

I can telnet to myself from 127.0.0.1, after allowing that in
/etc/hosts.allow.

I've allowed the local ip address ranges (172.16.), as well as specific
addresses, but to no avail.

There is no log in /var/log/messages or /var/log/secure that tells me
why it does not work. There was a log in /var/log/messages when I tried
to telnet to myself on 127.0.0.1, when /etc/hosts.allow did not have that
ip address in it.

  Has anyone seen this?

It is baffling. I've made redhat 3.3,4.2,5.x,6.x,mandrake
5.x,6.x,7.x,8.x work in the past, so I'm not a spring chicken.

netstat shows a listen on *:telnet .

there is no update for the telnet server that I could see on
ftp.redhat.com.

help?
