Thanks for the advice, Michael.

My problem was fixed (with the help of Bob Byron's post) by downloading a firewall configuration from http://monmotha.mplug.org/firewall/index.php .  After that, it worked like a champ.

Is it possible that your upstream provider is blocking pop3?  Do you see you connection packets arrive if you run a tcpdump on the firewall while connecting?
