I definitely agree.  I was pointing to a remote DNS which slowed my 
name resolution significantly.  Since my server is itself is running
named as a DNS server, I changed the nameserver to its own
IP address and both ftp and sendmail started responding 
immediately instead of with a ~30 second delay.
